NLCRC Activity Review

The National Lubricant Recycling Coalition (NLCRC) is an industry-led technical coalition of committed industry leaders in lubricant and petroleum-related packaging. The NLCRC is focused on establishing solutions for post-consumer recovery and recycling of plastic packaging and developing a national program that meets the definition of recyclable.

Part of the NLCRC’s focus is to invest in technical projects. Earlier this year, the NLCRC began building its first pilot recycling program to understand the financial and market drivers to recovery and recycling, explore consumer behaviors and gather meaningful data and information for scaling the efforts in other areas within the US.

In the coming months, the NLCRC will begin to communicate the progress of its pilot efforts along with an assessment of the EPR laws potentially affecting the industry. On August 28th, the NCLRC will be participating in the Petroleum Packaging Council’s Fall Meeting where the current efforts of the NLCRC will be shared with PPC members.

In September, the NLCRC will be having its first in-person meeting, hosted in Houston by Pennzoil/Quaker State, where members of the coalition will meet to discuss the legislation landscape in the US, future pilot efforts, and long-term planning.

“We are very excited at the progress we have been making within the coalition this year. Obviously, the legislative changes have created some urgency around our need to develop a solution, and we are in the process of evaluating how best to position for that. Our upcoming PPC meeting and our in-person meeting couldn’t be happening at a better time.” – Tristan Steichen, Executive Director of the National Lubricant Container Recycling Coalition.

The NCLRC work can play a role in helping bring companies together to learn and help transition the lubricant container sector to the circular economy. No company alone can shift the existing industry and community standards. To be able to make bold changes within the community, building trust and collaboration between many is essential.

From industries to households, everyone has an essential role in reducing the lubricant container waste problem in the US. The NLCRC founding leaders include  Castrol, Valvoline, Pennzoil - Quaker State Company, Graham Packaging, Plastipak Packaging, Berry Global, the Petroleum Packaging Council, and Chevron.
