Recap of The NLCRC’s Annual Strategic Planning Session – Fall 2023

During the 3rd and 4th of October, the National Lubricant Container Recycling Coalition (NLCRC) members held the annual strategic planning session in Phoenix, Arizona.

In this session, the NLCRC members discussed progress on key initiatives, including technical project updates, pilot activities, and the petroleum packaging sector’s response to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) implementation. The members also established 2024 strategic priorities, including approaches for managing future legislative changes and technical projects to explore value-chain solutions to improve packaging sustainability.

The NLCRC recognizes that the petroleum packaging industry's barriers are more significant than any one company can solve. Collaboration between the industry members has been critical to better address the petroleum packaging recycling challenge. EPR laws directly impact Producers, including Brand Owners and licensees. Given the challenges with the collection and recycling of petroleum and related packaging, the members also discussed an approach for an industry-specific, collaborative solution to ensure compliance with these regulations for the NLCRC members.

The National Lubricant Container Recycling Coalition or “NLCRC” is an industry-led technical coalition established by a committed group of industry leaders in lubricant and associated plastic packaging manufacturing, focused on establishing solutions for post-consumer recovery and recycling of plastic lubricant containers.

NLCRC members include Berry Global, Castrol, Chevron, CKS Packaging Inc., Graham Packaging, Nexus Circular, Pennzoil - Quaker State Company, Petroleum Packaging Council, Plastipak Packaging,  Safety-Kleen, and Valvoline.
