The 2024 Strategic Priorities For the NLCRC

In the fall of 2023, the National Lubricant Container Recycling Coalition (NLCRC) set up the strategic priorities going into 2024 during the annual strategic planning session. The priorities for 2024 are based on the results of the current and previous work by the NLCRC and its members and key industry drivers, such as the passage of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) packaging laws in the U.S.

As the EPR laws directly impact Producers, including Brand Owners and licensees, this upcoming year, the NLCRC will focus on monitoring and preparing for changes to existing packaging EPR laws as these occur, and highlight any key potential responses regarding pending legislation. Given the challenges with the recycling of petroleum and related packaging, the members also discussed an approach for an industry-specific, collaborative solution to ensure compliance with these regulations for the NLCRC members.

In addition, the NLCRC will be focusing on working toward the identification of a sustainable packaging strategy that helps industry members identify, prioritize, and execute projects that support sustainable packaging and other circular solutions within the petroleum packaging and related industry. Projects will consider legislative, consumer, and other industry challenges associated with collection and recycling, as well as design considerations for circular packaging. One of the outcomes of each exploratory project will be an evaluation of the business implications and projected industry benefits and impacts.

The NLCRC is an industry-led coalition established by a committed group of industry leaders in lubricant and associated plastic packaging manufacturing, focused on establishing solutions for post-consumer recovery and recycling of plastic lubricant containers.

NLCRC members include Berry Global, Castrol, Chevron, CKS Packaging Inc., Graham Packaging, Nexus Circular, Pennzoil - Quaker State Company, Petroleum Packaging Council, Plastipak Packaging,  RPM eco, Safety-Kleen, and Valvoline.
